It can be challenging for our novice paddlers in early summer. After a winter in the warmth of Banff swimming pool, out we go on Thursday evenings into the cold outdoors. This Thursday was no exception. A strong easterly wind had whipped the sea into a turbulence, quite testing for the more experienced paddlers. While Iain Brooker led the more experienced party out to the Bowfiddle Rock, Alan Meikle put the beginners group through their paces in Portknockie's wonderfully sheltered harbour.
Paddling sea kayaks is a challenge at first as they are more difficult to turn.
Once confidence gained, a venture beyond the harbour..but still within shelter and in sunshine!
And then out to get closer to the breaking waves. The noise can be unsettling as well as the movement from the swell.
As the sun dipped towards the horizon, the wind dropped, the sea calmed, and we all went that wee bit further out!
