8 members went over to W Ireland for a week in September, to try some of the surf breaks. Michael, Gary, George and Iain had been on the previous trip in 2015, and they were joined by Gonnie, Amelia, Andy and Ross. We rented a house near Easky in County Mayo, not far from Aughris Beach, where we got a gentle start. The week was dominated with a NW wind, which produced onshore conditions on most of the local breaks. We tried Inishcrone and Lackan Bay but they were not at their best. Achill Island was wonderful scenically, sunny and the break was big enough to challenge on the paddle out. Some great runs.
We visited Easky and found it quite busy, when it was working. Michael, Ross and Gary had some good waves. A reef break, it was a dawdle paddling out after Keel Strand.
Michael developed a massive hole in his spraydeck, so we dropped into Sligo to buy a new one on our way North to Donegal. Glencolmcille had some weird crisscrossing waves that generated haystacks. If you timed it right you could get some really long runs on the reforms. Not epic, but good fun.
The surf was varied and interesting, and the accommodation worked out cheap and comfortable, not least due to our masterchef George who planned the catering for the whole group down to a T.
Shame its a long way to drive for a weekend, or we would go more often.
