Deveron Canoe Club members, pictured here near Colgach Head, spent a long week exploring the Wester Ross coast near Ullapool. Based at Ardmair campsite, the party explored the coastline and the Summer Isles from Achiltibuie, in fine weather and calm sea conditions which allowed close-quarter exploration of the area’s spectacular coastal caves.
The Club had a 3 day sea kayaking weekend in August 2013, when we camped just North of Ullapool. We had a stormy day on the Saturday and took shelter in Loch Nedd, by Kylescue. After a wet day we were glad of the Lochinver Pie shop and cafe! The next day was a total contrast - a fabulously silky sea, and wall to wall sunshine. Perfect conditions which allowed us to explore the Summer Isles. On our last day, conditions were good in the morning so we struck out along the coast of Coigach, exploring every nook and cranny of the cliffs as we went. As we reached the true headland we met fog, a strong breeze, and confused seas as wind and tide clashed. A marked contrast to the calm conditions the previous day, the sea steadily calmed as the tidal speed slacked off. As we approached the last of the cliffs at Reiff, a climbing party loomed out of the mist, and we were entertained briefly by the rock gymnastics, before the fog closed in again. Then back into sunshine and glorious views to the hills. Another great weekend.
